Recreational Equipment Inc. has one of the widest selections of outdoor gear anywhere. If you live close to one of their retail stores, it's definitely worth a visit. And they have a terrific paper catalog. But the web site is superb, loaded with information about outdoor sports in general. It's a great place to search for information about specific areas to visit.

The Great Outdoor Recreation Pages (GORP) used to be a great source of information, from food recommendations and product reviews to how-to guides and maps. Unfortunately, they are now defunct. An explanation (and possible replacement) for this can be found at Kempoo, which has the story of what happened to GORP.
